Tunisia Presidential Elections : Why Beji Caied Essebsi is the likely winner and why Ennahda is looking for a consensus candidate

According to the latest news, around 48 national figures have expressed their intention to take part in the upcoming presidential elections in Tunisia. I am not sure if all of them will be able to collect the needed 10,000 signatures to formalize their candidacy but it is very likely that the upcoming presidential election will have a large number of candidates. While most of them are looking to build their image as a national figure in order to secure governmental positions and increase their influence, some are serious candidates and have been working on this campaign for a long time. If I look rationally to the political landscape and the latest polls we can actually have a short list of potential candidates who could make it to the 2nd round of the presidential elections. Here is the list: - Beji Caied Essebsi (BCE) - Hamadi Jebali - Moncef Marzouki - Mustapha Ben Jaafar - Hachemi Hamdi - Kamel Morjane - Nejib Chebbi - Hamma Hammami The list above includes all tho...

Mehdi Jomaa reiterates that he's leaving office after the elections.

Even though Jomaa has had the highest ratings throughout his mandate and that many have said that he could be the next head of government of a potential Ennahda/ Nidaa sponsored national unity governement, Jomaa met with representatives of the national and international media in the last two days to reiterate the message he has been conveying since he took office:"I am not staying". This is a good news for the democratic transitiona and an excellent message to the different parties and the international community.  The timing of this announcement is also interesting. Is he under pressure from a certain group? Is the situation that bad economically that he does not want to extend his tenure? Or is it a recognition that he does not have enough political capital with the main political parties that he prefers to announce his departure before others build their campaign on his name or criticizing his governement's results.
